Earthquake swarms

A swarm is a cluster of earthquakes in roughly the same area over hours to weeks, without one clearly dominant “mainshock.”

Not a prediction tool. Seeing a swarm on the live map does not tell you a larger quake will (or will not) hit a specific city at a specific time.

How swarms differ from aftershocks

In a classic mainshock–aftershock sequence, one large event stands out and smaller events follow. In a swarm, magnitudes are more similar and there is no obvious kingpin event. Both patterns are common on the USGS map — especially in volcanic or geothermal regions and some transform / spreading environments.
