A coherent, scientifically defensible story: hypothetical M9 on the Cascadia subduction zone and how Northern California — including the San Francisco Bay Area — could experience shaking and coastal tsunami effects under stated assumptions.
Assumptions (read these first)
- Chosen story: Hypothetical ~M9 rupture on the Cascadia megathrust (offshore Washington–Oregon–northern California), with impacts discussed for Northern California including the San Francisco Bay region.
- Why not “M9 under SF”: A magnitude ~9 typically requires a very long subduction interface. Framing Cascadia keeps the science honest; Bay Area local faults are usually discussed in the M7–8 range.
- Shake: Near-field Cascadia coast (WA/OR/northernmost CA) would be expected to see the strongest shaking; the Bay Area is farther south/southeast — still potentially strongly felt, with intensity highly site-dependent (bay mud vs rock).
- Tsunami: A Cascadia megathrust rupture could generate a significant Pacific tsunami. Coastal Northern California and Bay / harbor shorelines are discussed in what-if language only — official warnings come from tsunami.gov / NWS, never from this page.

MMI VIII–IX+ Cascadia near field
Coastal communities closest to a full-margin Cascadia rupture could experience very strong to violent shaking lasting minutes. This is the classic Cascadia educational picture (WA / OR / northernmost CA coast).
MMI VI–VII+ Inland Cascadia cities
Portland and Seattle metros are often discussed in Cascadia scenario literature as places that could see strong, damaging shaking — especially on soft soils — with large uncertainty by neighborhood.
MMI V–VII Northern California / Bay Area
Under this Cascadia M9 assumption, the San Francisco Bay Area is farther from the main rupture. People could feel prolonged shaking; damage potential rises on soft bay mud and vulnerable older buildings — but this is not the same as a local San Andreas M7–8 under the city. Site effects dominate.

Inside San Francisco Bay, tsunami effects — if any — depend on offshore wave energy, bay geometry, and harbor resonance. Educational takeaway: coastal and low-lying waterfront zones deserve evacuation literacy from official maps and drills. Ring of Fire does not issue warnings or ETA forecasts.
